Community College Cyber Defense Competition

Interested in computer networking, cyber security and cyber defense? Want to test your skills? Want to have a lot of fun? Come join us in the First Annual Community College Cyber Defense Competition (CCCDC).

Blue Teams (the network defenders) are comprised of three to six community college students. The Blue Teams are given a scenario listing the required services and systems that will have to be run in the competition. Approximately one month prior to the competition, the teams are given remote access to the eight machines they will use in the competition. They can be setup in any manner as long as the guidelines of the competition are followed. On December 1, 2007, the teams will arrive at the ISEAGE facility to defend their network against the Red Team. The Red Team is comprised of IT professionals and graduate students who play the role of attacker in the competition. It is their job to evaluate the security of the Blue Team’s network and try to break in using whatever means possible. At the end of the competition, the red team conducts a debriefing with the blue teams to let them know what the teams did particularly well or what they need to work on for future competitions.

Terms to Know for the CCCDC

CCCDC: Community College Cyber Defense Competition. It is modeled after the ISU Cyber Defense Competition and the High School Cyber Defense Competitions. It has been designed as a defense and survivability exercise where the participants will need to minimize the risk of a security breech while ensuring necessary operational services are maintained. The competition is open to all community college students who are interested in remotely configuring and securing a network over a one month time period and spending a day defending it. A cyber defense competition involves a team of four teams: blue, red, green and white.

Blue Team: Three to six community college students make can enter a team to compete in the CCCDC. They play the role of IT staff members who defend a network. Teams have approximately one month to remotely configure and secure their network. On the day of the event they arrive in Ames to protect their network from the Red Team for an extended period of time. During this time, they will also be asked to participate in tasks as designated by the Green Team. By completing each task, they better their overall score in the competition.

Red Team: The Red Team is comprised of IT professionals. It is their job to evaluate the security of the Blue Team’s network and try to break in using whatever means possible. At the end of the competition, the Red Ream conducts a debriefing to let Blue Teams know what they did particularly well or what they need to work on for future competitions.

Green Team: Green Team members simulate actual users on the Blue Team network. They get to surf the web, open e-mails, hit on keys, install software that shouldn’t be installed and overall act like normal end users. They also ask for things such as new services to be installed throughout the contest.

White Team: The White Team members are the judges in the event.
